Mendelssohn Piano Trio

The Foundation of Leisure World and the E&R Department are pleased to bring Mendelssohn Piano Trio to Leisure World on Saturday, June 16 at 7 PM for a special performance in Clubhouse II. Tickets are $8 per person and go on sale at 8:30 am on Tuesday, May 15 in both clubhouses.

For the past 15 years, Mendelssohn Piano Trio has been thrilling audiences in the U.S. and abroad, performing with that rare combination of powerful individual talent and tight-knit collaboration that is the hallmark of a truly exceptional chamber music ensemble. The Mendelssohn Piano Trio's extensive repertoire embraces works from all periods of the genre's history. As well, ensemble members are superb soloists in their own right. Currently, the Mendelssohn Piano Trio is Ensemble-in-Residence for Washington, D.C.'s Embassy Series. Pianist Ya-Ting Chang is from Taiwan, violinist Peter Sirotin is from Russia and cellist Fiona Thompson is from England.

Ya-Ting Chang graduated from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University with BM and MM in piano performance. She is a member of piano faculty at Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania, and was on the faculty at Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Maryland. She has toured in the U.S. and abroad.

Since his debut at the age of 14, performing Paganini Concerto No. 1 with Kharkiv philharmonic in his native Ukraine, violinist Peter Sirotin has performed hundreds of concerts as a chamber musician, soloist and concertmaster in Europe, North America and Asia. After graduating with honors from Moscow’s Central Music School, Mr. Sirotin became the youngest member of the “Moscow Soloists” chamber ensemble. Mr. Sirotin has also studied in Moscow Conservatory and Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University.

As cellist of the Mendelssohn Piano Trio, Fiona Thompson has become known among devoted audiences for what one Washington Post critic has described as her “eloquent,” “radiant” and “unfailingly handsome” sound. She began her cello studies at the age of seven in her native England, and over a musical career that spans nearly 20 years, she has performed across the U.S., Europe and Asia.

The Foundation of Leisure World is a 501(c) 3 organization, which was established for charitable, health, educational and cultural purposes. Contributions to the foundation may be claimed as deductions on income tax returns to the extent permitted by law.

Sunday Afternoon at the Movies – Just Go with It

The E&R Department is pleased to present “Sunday Afternoon at the Movies.” They are shown in the auditorium of Clubhouse II at 2 PM on Sundays. Sunday, June 10 is the date for the screening of "Just Go with It" (2011, rated PG-13 for frequent crude and sexual content, partial nudity, brief drug references and language; 1 hr. 56 mins., not closed-captioned). Free tickets, limit two per person, are required; they can be obtained from the E&R office in either Clubhouse I or II beginning at 8:30 am on Tuesday, June 5.

When plastic surgeon Danny Maccabee lies to his girlfriend that he is a divorced family man, he recruits his office manager and her children to role-play as his ex-wife and kids—generating a flood of farcical results and unintended consequences.

The movies are for your enjoyment; there is no charge. Be sure to pick up your ticket(s) if you plan to attend. Please note that no one will be seated after 2 PM.

Donations to help cover the expenses associated with the presentations are gratefully accepted. A basket will be available for your contribution.

Community Show 2012

This year’s Community Show, “Your Hit Parade,” a musical romp from the radio days of the 40’s through the early TV year’s of the 50’s, will take place June 29 at 7:30 PM, June 30 at 7:30 PM and July 1 at 2 PM in Clubhouse II’s auditorium. Sponsored by E&R, directed by Jean McGoldrick and Aileen Feldman, this event will be performed, as usual, by Fun and Fancy. Ticket prices will be very affordable at $3 per show, and tickets will go on sale at both E&R offices in the clubhouses on Tuesday, June 5.

A portion of the Leisure World holiday celebration, the Community Show has become a mainstay of the Leisure World experience of resident participation. Titled after a past piece of American musical media, we hope that “Your Hit Parade” will rekindle memories past and bring a good feeling to your present. This is an easy way to spend a hot summer evening or afternoon with some “cool” entertainment in order to benefit E&R and your community.

Independence Day Picnic on the Lanai

Enjoy Wednesday, July 4, with a picnic on the Lanai. Tables must be reserved in advance for either the noon or 3 PM seating at $1 per person, payable in the E&R Office of Clubhouse I beginning at 8:30 am on Tuesday, June 5.

Perrie, LLC., Leisure World’s Food Service managed by Ed Richardson, will take care of your holiday cooking by offering special picnic fare in the Maryland Room or you may bring your own food.

Alcoholic beverages cannot be brought onto the clubhouse premises; this includes the clubhouse and the Lanai. You may, however, purchase beverages from the Stein Room.

The deadline to sign up is when capacity is reached or by noon on Wednesday, June 27.

Please note: Because of the expected number of participants, it is not possible to have seating indoors. In case of inclement weather, participants can choose to picnic under the Lanai or purchase food and “picnic” at their own homes.

The outdoor swimming pool will be open. Use of the pool is free for residents (with resident ID) and guests must have tickets and be signed in by a resident. Children (ages 4 through 15) can swim from 10 am to 1 PM and must be accompanied by an adult in swimwear. Passes may be obtained at the E&R Office in either clubhouse.

Make plans now to join your community for the annual Independence Day Celebration, and reserve your space for a picnic on the Lanai.

Blue Angel: A Roy Orbison Tribute

The E&R Department is pleased to welcome as Terry Harris performs the legendary hits of one of America's greatest singer/songwriters – Roy Orbison – on stage in Clubhouse II’s auditorium at 4:30 PM on Saturday, July 14. Through song and narration, he will capture the look, sound and essence of the late, great Roy Orbison in concert. Tickets, $7 per person, go on sale at 8:30 am on Tuesday, June 5.

Legendary singer, songwriter Roy Orbison left his mark of genius on rock and roll that will never be duplicated. His near flawless operatic voice and songs that would build to climatic endings would bring to the 60’s music scene performances that had never been heard or scene before. Terry Harris brings back the glory days of the big “O” with his “Blue Angel – A Roy Orbison Tribute.”

Terry Harris did not take the task of impersonating Roy lightly. He has admired the man and his music from the time he got his first guitar at the age of 12. Fortunate to see Roy perform in Baltimore in 1988, he has an intimate knowledge of not only Roy’s songs, but also the way he delivered them. There will never be another Roy Orbison, but through Terry’s close attention to detail – the look, the sound and the music – with the first notes of “Only the Lonely,” you will think it is 1960 again.

So do not miss out. Get your tickets early for this trip back to the 60’s!
